I found the topics we covered in class on poverty, bullying, and child abuse extremely thought provoking. I think we all know that these cases exist, but I also think we forget about how often they really do occur. During these past couple of classes, I could not help but think about these cases, especially after listening to all the stories, hearing about all their statistics, and watching the videos on them.
I will be student-teaching for Ms. Reddick and was e-mailing her to set up a time to meet with her. In her response she stated she looked forward to working with me and welcoming me into their 2nd grade classroom family. That was exactly the way I envisioned my future classrooms! I was so excited when I read that. I believe that for some of our students in poverty or abuse, the classroom will be a reprieve. I would like to create a classroom family. I believe by creating a classroom family, you also create a safe environment where bullying would definitely be lessened if not non-existent. A family where everyone matters and what you have to say counts. Do families have issues to work through? Of course, and a classroom family will no doubt have theirs, but we can work through them together!
Bridget, I'm so glad you're excited to join Ms. Reddick's class! I can't wait to hear more in the Wednesday seminars about your classroom family.
ReplyDeleteI agree that we need to have a family atmosphere in order to prevent bullying. Also, a family would be more aware of any child abuse or poverty issues. Hopefully, the children would also be more accepting of any such differences. I hope in my classroom to create a stable environment, providing structure to students who may not have any stability at home. Having a stable family makes children want to come to school, just like people like going home to a stable loving family.
I really like that you made the connection on classroom as a family and a community. I agree, I really want to have a classroom like a really close family. Pointing that out is very important. Sometimes as educators, we overlook the most important things that seem to be the smallest. Also, for children getting abused or who are poor, it is a safe place that they enjoy being all day.
ReplyDeleteI agree also that to really understand and help all of our students to the best of our ability we must first build that strong family environment that you talk about. Until we understand and get to know our students I don't think we'll be able to help our students through any difficulties they may be facing.
